I wrote a couple of articles about this a few days ago that I took down because I realized that I hadn’t considered them well before posting. Now I’m revisiting the subject a little more carefully.

The Indian government has blocked numerous websites and apps in the state of Jammu & Kashmir, including peaceful Ladakh. This is in an effort to make it difficult for terrorist networks to communicate, though I doubt that it has had so much of an impact on them, as they have probably figured out how to get around the blocks by now.

Facebook, Pinterest, Twitter, Skype, Snapchat, Whatsapp, Flickr, Instagramm, etc. have been banned for at least the next few months. Originally, there were supposedly only 22 sites that were blocked, but it seems there are many more. Fortunately, the major email services haven’t been blocked, though I wouldn’t be surprised if they have blocked encrypted ones.

In any case, if you are visiting the state, you may want to let friends and family know that communication may be a little more challenging than usual. Internet access in the state is iffy even at the best of times, which this is clearly not. But, hey, you could always phone home…someone would undoubtedly love it if you did.
