I’m a big supporter of organic everything and am always on the lookout for organic stores and products wherever I go. It’s a challenge in India, but awareness is increasing. Sikkim has declared itself to be India’s first all organic state. I’m longing to head up that way and see how they are doing.
All over India, farmers are starting to realize that they have been conned in a big way by companies like Monsanto into believing that GMOs and heavy application of pesticides would help them increase crop yields. Many have found out the hard way that it just isn’t so.
Anyway, what I really want to mention for those of you who are always on the lookout for organic food is that there is a good directory from eSvasa. Click here to order it from Amazon.in. Unfortunately, it’s only available as a paperback. If you are lucky, you may encounter a restaurant or store that gives them away. I got one recently from Carrots in Bangalore. It appears that they put out a new edition every year. Their website, www.esvasa.com, is a good resource, as well.
Unfortunately, there is a significant amount of fraud in India’s organic market, though I think that’s the case in many places. The situation is much better than in China, at least, where it seems that nothing is genuinely organic.
