Since India is in the middle of a killer heat wave, I’m posting some essential information related to staying healthy when it is way too hot. It’s actually a bit hard to relate to all this as it’s been pretty cool up in the mountains where I am.

  • Rest more than usual
  • Drink lots of water—at least 3 liters a day
  • A cool, wet cloth on your head can help keep you cool if there’s no air-conditioning available
  • Wear loose, lightweight, cotton or linen clothes and avoid dark, synthetic, heavy or tight clothes
  • Avoid going outside in the hottest part of the day, between 11am and 4pm
  • Use an umbrella or hat—or both—if you do have to go out in the hot part of the day
  • Try to stay out of the direct sun
  • Avoid heavy physical activity in the heat of the day
  • Don’t drink caffeinated drinks (coffee, tea, soda, etc.) or alcohol
  • Rehydrate by drinking tender coconut water or “nimbu pani (lemon water—not soda), sweet and salt” or  commercial rehydration salts
  • Avoid deep-fried and heavy foods
  • Go for air-conditioned transportation if possible
