This is the first in a series of photos from villages around where I’ve been staying and traveling that I’ll be posting. I noticed this guy making rotis (chapatis) outside his home and thought it was rather interesting. The pressure cooker to the side is undoubtedly filled with rice or dal that he has already cooked. Incidentally, at this altitude, a pressure cooker is the only reasonable way to cook things like rice and dal. The family has a proper kitchen inside with a gas stove, but the extended family is so large that it’s hard to cook enough inside, so when the weather allows, part of the meal gets cooked outside. In this part of Himachal Pradesh, there is actually plenty of firewood without cutting down trees, which is illegal anyway.
