PI met this pujari  at a temple in a tiny village in Kerala, not far from Chalakudy. I had him do a small puja for me. Such a sweet man!

One thing that I found interesting, though I couldn’t ask him, was that he had painted the fingernails on his left hand blue, with a red streak on the thumb. (You can see it if you enlarge the photo.)

Of course, it’s obvious that the blue signifies Shiva and the red, Shakti, though this is an exceptionally unusual style of symbolism. None of us, including my friend who comes from a very illustrious family of pandits herself, had ever seen this, so presumably it was his own idea.
