One of my favorite treats in South India—though you can often get them in the North, as well— is tender coconut water. You find coconut sellers along the roads just about everywhere. After you’ve finished the juice. They cut the coconut in half and fashion a scoop for the tender coconut meat. Be a little careful with how you eat this. The coconut juice is pretty safe, but the scoop could get a little contaminated, so you don’t want to take the whole thing in your mouth.
Incidentally, coconut water is perhaps the best possible fluid replacement if you are suffering from dehydration. You don’t need to carry around packets of rehydration salts if coconut juice is available. In hot weather, I try to have one or two a day, if possible.
