Delhi is not really my favorite place to be, especially since I’d much rather be in some remote place in the mountains. However, I have to admit that there is always something on—there are usually many events and exhibitions to choose from, so there’s really no excuse for sitting around with nothing to do.

A couple of days ago I attended the Nritya Bharati dance festival at Kamini Auditorium, which is a beautiful venue. The performance was a total delight—and it was free, as are many such events.

This photo is of is one of the performers, Vijayalakshmi (‘Bubbli’ to her friends), an outstanding Mohiniyattam dancer, giving a solo performance. Mohiniyattam is the feminine classical dance form of Kerala, characterized graceful, flowing movements.

The festival included performances of several other dance forms, as well, including Kathak, Odissi, etc. I was quite impressed with the quality of the performances.
