This is a favorite image of mineā€”the solitary dandi swami with his danda (staff) by the Ganges, India’s most sacred river. The danda, which represents Brahman, the ultimate reality, is not allowed to ever touch the ground directly. Normally, it is wrapped in orange cloth. Here, he was just preparing to dip it in the river. This photo was taken during the Kumbha Mela in Haridwar.
