The Kumbha Mela is in full swing now. On the 15th there were an estimated 5.5 million people in Haridwar for the last shahi snan, which is a day that has been deemed particularly auspicious for dipping in the holy river. This is maybe 15 times the population of Haridwar, so the crowd is almost unimaginable. Allahabad is easier because the mela area is much bigger. In Haridwar, the area is so small that it’s almost impossible to move in such a crowd. The next two important days, March 30 and April 15, will see many more people in attendance.
